DELIVERY – MYRIAD OF THOUGHTS (27-Jan-2020)
Word Delivery
conjures up some wonderful thoughts and images.
The birth of a baby in the family is the culmination of many an anxious
moment and in the arrival of a new bundle of joy family members rejoice. This wonderful moment erases from our memories
any preceding sad events, like a death in the family. A strong notion put forth is that with a newborn
even deceased members of the family take a new life within the family circles.
Delivery
brings a lot of joy to the recipient when (s)he receives wonderful gift(s) from
a sender. The joy quotient heightens when
there is a surprise element. The courier
is profusely thanked as signs of elation and gratitude arise. The arrival of good news is perpetually welcome;
happiness is viral and infectious irrespective of who the recipient.
Delivery
in the modern world and to the younger generation is akin to favorite food delivered
home at the doorstep. A favorite pizza, or
the spicy Andhra food, or vegetables - reaches the precincts of our homes today
via online shopping and is now a global phenomenon. A recent ad pleasantly surprised me that even
tea in a variety of avatars like spicy, cardamom, ginger, etc. is delivered hot
in family pack sizes. The delivery moment
springs smiles to one and all; a twist to the tale is when it is delayed or has
turned cold - then the bringer incurs the wrath of the entire family. The Amazon, the Flipkart, and the like have
elevated this concept to new heights. The
technology advancements has hastened the momentum in this field.
The next
category of delivery is quite bemusing to say the least…
Delivery
in the IT world signifies the handover of software code to the customer and
deploying them on their computer systems to address and help solve their pain
points. Typical terminology is Go Live -
apt given that it brings the customer computer systems to life.
Recently
my aged parents overheard my IT colleague’s discussion in the living room. The discussion - “Next week’s delivery will
be riddled with challenges and will be painful.
She will need a lot of support; not sure if she will be able to take it
alone, a testing time given her first delivery.
Lots of planning has gone in with well thought-out mitigation steps and we
have been pro-active to anticipate all scenarios that may come up as hurdles, but
then we need His Grace to bring her success.”
A little
while later as my colleague exited, my parents dashed into the living room “Sorry
to hear that she may experience delivery problems. What complications does she have? Don’t worry we can consult an expert doctor with
good experience to handle any complications.
First delivery can be a little challenge but do not worry; ensure they
pick a post-raahukaala (typically a 1.5-hour time window in a day which is
considered inauspicious) and it will be a smooth delivery!!”
We told
our parents that this is an IT Project Manager who is preparing for project delivery
and had a good laugh. My parents neither
understood the delivery aspects nor the laugh acronym ROFL.
That is delivery in today’s
context that can flummox the non-IT fraternity!
