LAUGH AND THE WORLD LAUGHS WITH YOU (01-Feb-2020)
Weep and you weep alone….
Laughter clubs have mushroomed around us and has brought
us all together, both men and women of all ages, for lighter moments. Laughter enhances the release of endorphins
to augment the feel-good factor and decreases the stress levels. We all agree that laughter is the best
medicine and are familiar with the smirks and smiles, giggles and the gaggles, cackles
and the chuckles, and in today’s ubiquitous social media environment, the ROFL
– Rolling on Floor Laughing!
When I approached the lady, only then I could
tell she had burst out laughing, literally.
Tears rolled down her eyes, she tried her best to wipe them off, a few
friends around her checked to see if she had choked, others even offered her
water to drink – exact state-of-affairs at the scene as I witnessed at close
proximity. This was at a party where
there were a few new friends-of-friends invited to expand the like-minded
group. The lady was new to this group
and upon hearing a joke could not control her laugh. A crying laugher!
At a comedy show the atmosphere was filled with
laughter, a reflection of the on-stage person – a comedian who splattered jokes
drawn upon from various happenings around us.
He had the uncanny ability to pick up a casual talk, a heated argument, a
news clipping, an ad in a newspaper, or a simple TV celebrity interview and
turn it around sprinkled with sarcasm and humor with a twist-to-the-tale. However, it was this chap in the audience in
a flower-printed shirt that caught everyone’s attention. He scared his neighbors every time it
prompted a laughter – he thumped the side-arms of his chair or clapped in a
loud manner or slapped his thighs or even rhythmically pounded one
foot-at-a-time on the floor. This chap dished
out a bonus dose of laughter as one witnessed his mannerisms. The eerie laugher!
The super villain in the Hindi movie Kick carved
out the laughter scenes that stood out for its wickedness and gave the viewer
goosebumps. His characteristic laugh was
that of a series of cycle-tyre punctures followed by a soda-pop sound to announce
the end. In olden days, our cycle tyres when
pierced with a nail would let out the air which gave birth to the
‘tooooosssshhhh’ sound. But this actor
instilled fear in the audience; we conferred him the title of evil laugher!
The breed of silent laughers quietly enjoy the
humor and they constitute a major chunk.
There is no exhibitionism, on the contrary they withdraw to a corner to
enjoy a private moment, or hold a handkerchief to hide the smile from the
public. It has nothing to do with not understanding
the joke nor a lack of appetite for enjoying a few light moments. It has everything to do with the fact that
they are mostly private people who abundantly live in solitude both when they
score a victory as well as when vanquished.
The silent laugher!
The world however laughs with you any which way
you laugh, which proves the hypothesis I set out with the title to this
write-up. This write-up may resonate
with you; any which way you find it just laugh-it-off!
I feel calm and peaceful probably because of less stress.
