SANS (SUN) SCREEN (16-May-2021)
Covid imposed quarantine has unleashed a surfeit of challenges the world-over especially for households. WFH – Work From Home, is the new norm!
Many
families in India have three generations under one roof, truly Unity in
Diversity! It is an art as well as a
science to balance the intents, thoughts, ensuing actions, and resultant
outcome of truly diverse groups. During
the pre-Covid era, we had children from the youngest generation packed off to
schools and colleges for almost the entire day; while we the parent generation
packed ourselves off into cars headed to our offices as well the extended late-night
meetings and the weekend parties.
Grandparents
in a ‘home alone’ mode would heave a sigh of relief. Lo behold, their mode propelled them to switch
on the TV sets never to switch it off again for the rest of the week. The soaps and the serials became a part of
their daily rigmarole, and without the dialogues on-screen in the background, they
were tight-lipped to recite pooja shlokas.
On a day when the cable went kaput, that meant the God in their pooja
room went into a state of daze, a la solitary confinement, for the plot was
lost to pay obeisance to Him! A surreal
phenomenon it seemed that the chores would be on auto-play if only the TV
screen and the associated sound (call it noise?) flowed incessantly.
The
virus tucked everyone to confine within home precincts. In the WFH ploy the parents were on
video-conferences the entire day – dad in his make-to-do blazer worn on his
boxer shorts, while mom wiped her beads of sweat and dabbed a make-do make-up
to look her best. The young
college-bound girl and the school-bound boy feigned camera-smartness as digitally
savvy age-group to put their best front forward in a virtual manner. Grandparents in a state of quandary!
Grandparents’
daily chores, be it the grandma’s pooja shlokas or the grandpa’s morning
ablutions reached an impasse. Their
auto-play was impeded, and they wore a dejected outlook or so it appeared; they
felt heavy-footed and appeared clueless like two people stuck in quicksand endeavoring to dance to their favorite tune. The pandemic-induced
restrictions imposed a longer stay at home with no resolution in sight.
A
pact was made that TV screen can be on only during the absence of any virtual sessions,
be it classes or meetings. This
condition was never satisfied around the clock; the grandparents disposition an
imposed second-level lockdown at home termed ‘sans screen!’ This applied to the TV screen alone which
distracted the kids’ online sessions, but the screens of all other digital gadgets
stayed on.
A
perfect logjam, grandpa vented out his frustration and hit upon an idea to head
out to the pool for a special infusion of Vitamin-D, a recommended
immune-booster. Grandma reminded him
that the pool stays closed and insisted that the sun-screen lotion be his
rescue aid and so he applied it all over his body. Only to be told a little later to don his ‘mask’
and strictly follow ‘Social Distancing’ measures at the pool-side.
An
escalated frustration level with multiple levels of impediments forced the grandpa
to instead lie down on the cot in the living room with his swim trunks. Grandma quipped ‘you are in a sans screen
situation smeared with copious amounts of sunscreen on you!’ Grandpa roared when
it became evident to her that it was his snore, in his slumber!
So
much for the grandparents’ sans (sun)screen dilemma!
A very interesting and simple routine Prasanna Sir has come out with in his impeccable mastery of English language. So far so good but here in Delhi NCR most of the families are undergoing a new kind of life, for all the three generations, with one of the members down with Covid positive symptoms making the life of others miserable. Every second home in any residential colony is undergoing harrowing times. Lockdown have, therefore, extended til 24th May. I pray for returning to the type of Life described so well by the author of this article full of Positivity.
ReplyDeleteSir I agree that situation is very different but like you have intended may the good times be back...but just before Wave 2 many families were in this state. Bangalore is no different today.....once again THANKS for your time adn interest
DeleteWriter of above mentioned comments are by Prof J K Mehta from Gurugram, Delhi NCR
ReplyDeleteYes sir I recognized from your comments....thank you once again...
Deletehmmmm...... well described the war of 3 gens inside the homes while covid rages on outside Prasanna...!! Loved your line "This applied to the TV screen alone which distracted the kids’ online sessions, but the screens of all other digital gadgets stayed on." thats the latest relaity Look forward to your next one :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much.....rules to suit our convenience without knowing the actual outcome....and then each to his (her) own when it comes to applying any rules....thanks ocne again for your time.....take care and stay safe

Tough times and my attempt was to keep this in lighter vein.... but a situation in most households...
DeleteThanks a lot Ramanath
Reality check seems a little different is what I feel...could be - only 2 generations living under one roof these days. Case 1 :It's either middle aged parents and their Septua/octo generian (G) parents while the kids might have flown out of the nest.
ReplyDeleteCase 2 : WFH parents and their young kids with their online classes...When the parent's - moms' mostly- smartphone/laptop is to be shared or time slotted for academics & cocurricular sessions.while the good old grandparents in their own haven are alone & lonely too..As their children have now turned 'virtual' visitors due to LD restrictions. God help them further on as 2nd & 3rd waves are grinding the serial shootings to a halt!
True.....expanding our horizon we get to see many 3 generations under one roof....you're right not all though.
DeleteYes hard to imagine this continuing for many more months.....
Thanks for your time
Again pras..Purely my views on the subject.
ReplyDeleteSo please accept it with a pinch of salt☺️
Absolutely agree to what you have said......but like I said in my previous comment...when we really look around....beyond even metros....
DeleteCheers
😄😄😄. We can relate to this situation. Very true.
ReplyDeleteTrue... thanks for your time
DeleteHaha, good one, Prasanna. Some light-hearted mirth while there is so much going on wrong as a result of the pandemic. And word play is cool - seems to be an inheritance :)
ReplyDeleteWhen no other inheritance frucified...i had to inherit this at the least....
DeleteThanks a lot
Good one Prasanna. We have encroached and taken over their once peaceful abode :-)...
ReplyDeleteVery true... they enjoyed the evening of their life but now.... like you said 'encroached'
DeleteThanks a lot
Sort of pleasant and lovingly chiding write up.One of his best.
ReplyDeleteThanks doctarre.... there's so much going on and you've been stressed too.... and hence this light reading has resonated better....thanks a lot....
DeleteVery humorously written Prasanna.
ReplyDeleteThe "sandwich" life is tricky navigation as it is, now with the added challenge of pandemic-forced 24-hr non-distancing :-)
Some grandparents have discovered the joys of Netflix & Prime !
The more OTT platforms they learn about... the more exciting it gets for grandparents...
DeleteLD is an altogether new element introduced....
Thanks a lot
@Prasanna In these testing times, maintaining the equanimity to put across something humorous is not easy.. Kudos to you 🙏 'sans (TV) screen' is a difficult proposition for elderly at home and sans mobile screen is a difficult proposition for rest of us :)
ReplyDeleteYou bet on the same. Losing sanity in these testing times is easy..... I'm trying to bring in some lighter vein to bring a smile
DeleteThank you very much for your read and comments...
Good writeup Prasanna. Can relate to this.
