RE-BIRTH EXPERIENCE! (03-July-2021)
Never a pretty sight to witness and study the under-belly of an 18-wheeler truck when it is in motion!
Feb 18, 1994 – in USA traveling in a car in Texas from a small-town Beaumont to Houston on highway I-10, I caught a glimpse of the under-belly of a massive 18-wheeler truck.
Master Hirannaiah’s “Lanchavatara” was playing in the car, as my friend and I drove amongst well-disciplined drivers. The master in his own inimitable style delivering intertwined ocean of words, a’ la vehicles movement into and out of the highway, kept us entertained as we were immersed in this kannada narration and ruminating on the same!
Our car was cruising along in the middle lane when suddenly two nerve-wracking swerves, first to the left and then to the right perched us stationary in a precarious position, perpendicular to the flow of traffic. I could see two approaching ‘semis’ one behind the other – monster trucks a very common sight on US highways. One, they have an overwhelming effect due to their sheer size and road-presence with 18 wheels, and two, its own momentum could pose a challenge to brake and stop during emergencies!
At 90-degrees to the traffic flow, seated in the right-side passenger seat I was closer to the 1st truck as it approached. It sent shivers up the spine then, and even now. Family images whizzed past me – a near-death experience, ‘a glimpse of my entire life’ in a matter of seconds. The driver maneuvered (or was it destined) the beast and avoided hitting our car where the front few sets of wheels missed before the metals collided as the rear wheels clambered over the bonnet. I had the misfortune in that passing second, to peek into the underside of the shining metal and the ghastly view of the 2nd semi as it fast approached!
The next thing I heard a voice from deep within. I believed I was dead and all blood and meat, if not at least a blood-smeared body with broken limbs. God could not have been kinder; when I opened my eyes, I saw my legs intact but just a few centimeters ahead was the mangled mess of the front one-third! My limbs moved; I released the seat-belt that had so snuggly held on to my torso. I reached out to the door handle, but the door hinges were jammed. I climbed out from the driver-side door. I could see huge smoke emanating from what used to be a bonnet that held the engine underneath it! The front nose gone kaput, a mashed metal remained with the rear two-thirds still intact!
My friend was in a state of shock; it had not dawned on him that we had just escaped a ‘near-death’ experience. A church van that had whizzed past us stopped ahead and the passengers walked back to where we sat kneeled down in front of the vehicle. A lady approached me and asked, ‘where are the dead occupants?’ When I told her that I was one of the lucky ones to have escaped unhurt, she exclaimed to her fellow group: “God wanted the two to live.” Unscathed from this harrowing experience, it sounded music then to our shocked fears!
Apparently the left-front tyre had burst causing the car to swerve first to the left. My friend had jammed the brakes which rotated the left front rim and swerved the car to the right. The car came to a screeching halt. The rest is only for conjecture. February 18th may as well - a RE-BIRTHday! A re-birth of sorts…the Lord has His own plans and we are only players!!
OMG..!! Sounds like a Ramsay movie script :-(
ReplyDeletePrasanna, am so glad u r bk in namma Bengaluru n able to recount the incident to us in your own inimitable fashion..!!
Stay blessed...
At that moment and even now when I remember that it scares me and its no movie script. But you're right...it sounds that way.
DeleteI'm glad too and it had a lasting impact for a few days but I had to get over it by driving out onto the highway the very next day...
Thanks once again....
Glad that you survived that one. I survived a tyre burst too..about 26 years back..
ReplyDeleteThanks Prof.....feeling is mutual and glad that you survived too....thanks for your read adn comments
DeleteHair-raising accident and you've lived through it to tell the tale! Can only echo the same thing the lady exclaimed to her fellow group: “God wanted the two to live.” May you life be fruitful and a blessing to others 🙏
ReplyDeleteThanks Rajendra. Accidents are thus but this one to live through and unscathed could've been only through HIS blessings. Thanks for your wishes....it did change my perspective towards life and overall increased sensitivity.....made me to lead life for a purpose...
DeleteThanks a lot for your read and comments...
Really scary experience. Thank God, both you and your friend came out of it. Never mind what happened to the car.
ReplyDeleteIt is said that such experiences affect people profoundly, force them to re-evaluate their life purpose, goals etc. and people change drastically after such incidents. Do you see yourself changing after this scary incident?
Thanks and Regards - KSM
Yes it was sir.....the car remains a mangled mess. Yes like I have written on another reader's comment: ....it did change my perspective towards life and overall increased sensitivity.....made me to lead life for a purpose....
DeleteIt left a lingering thought that life is evanescent and you have to lead life to its fullest now.....there is no tomorrow! Better let me not get too philosophical.....
Thanks ocne again for your time, read and comments.....
Really a horrible incident..God is great....recollecting the memories like this is rally horrifying...as the lady said God wanted you both to live.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much...no I'm ok now. When you know HE plans your life, all we habve to do is live as per that. And yes HE wanted both of us to live....
DeleteThanks a lot
What an experience Prasanna..."God wanted the two to live" must be still echoing in your ears.
ReplyDeleteYes it is and it is sweet music now. It was indeed an experience that changed my perspective towards life. Thanks a lot
DeleteSounds ghastly prasanna . Glad you came out of it .
ReplyDeleteThis whole narration brings back memories when my wife was clipped by a 18 wheeler and her car was a total caused it bounced back and forth between the trailer and the guard rail . She survived but not before she had to go through a lot of therapy and support to get back onto the road . Even to this day if she's beside a 18 wheeler for any reason she speeds up / slows down to avoid a on the face scenario.
Oh my...wish you had left your name. I can understand your wife's predicament. It's not easy.....in my case since I came out unscathed I wanted to get over it immediately. Sleeping that night was tough, and hence the next day I took my car out and drove out to the highway merging with the traffic and getting over it. It helped. Glad your wife survived the accident and is alive with all of us. GOD BLESS
DeleteGod is great...
ReplyDeleteYes that's true
DeleteSuch nice and heart touching
ReplyDeleteThank you very much Pranati
DeleteLucky you! God had different plans for you. Otherwise remaining unscathed in such a ghastly accident? OMG 🙏
ReplyDeleteYes very true...not a scratch. But a mangled mess of a car.....Thanks
DeletePras. Sweat beads in the Spine as I relived a similar incident on the day of my engagement in 1990 on my bike.. Good lord you are alive and kicking..Stay safe and happy..
ReplyDeleteWish you had left your name
DeleteGlad you came out of that incident alive and are kicking others around you since then ;-)
Thanks a lot....and you too stay safe
Parents, God, Family & well wishers blessings are with you 💐🙏🏻
ReplyDeleteYou're absolutely right... that's what protected me..
DeleteThanks a lot

ReplyDeleteIndeed destiny was in your favour "God wanted the two to live" 🙏
You're absolutely right... count my blessings even today... and it's helped to understand HIS presence in our lives
DeleteThanks a lot
Prasanna, what a narration of that horrific accident we both had, I'm thankful to god each and every day for RE-BIRTH.
ReplyDeleteManju you're the special friend with whom i cherish a divine alignment. If one of us had any different writing then destiny would've been different. However our writing saved each other abyss we came out unhurt... literally without a scratch..
DeleteWe need to celebrate our re-birth soon once the pandemic eases
Thank you for everything... like they say being through thick and thin.... but this experience is the ultimate
Appreciate
Above message
DeleteABYSS = AND
OMG! Grateful you and your friend survived. Stay blessed
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot... we both survived because it was HIS writing...
DeleteWhat a harrowing incident man. Lucky to be alive and how well you have narrated. Such an incident no doubt changes one's perception of life. Prasanna, Manju and you are lucky and blessed. Take care.
ReplyDeleteYes thanks friend.... we both consider ourselves lucky always.... and true it did change our perception towards life... thanks once again
DeleteIt must have been very frightening. After so many years you could still recollect and write about it. It must have been terrible. Happy it ended in you and your friend being safe. Take care.
ReplyDeleteIt all happened so fast that there was no time to be frightened...
DeleteIt's always there in my mind and hence no question of recollection....
It's counting our blessings...
Thanks for your time
Prasanna, glad you came out of it unscathed, don't think I ever knew about it, anyway beautiful narration of a scary incident, felt as if I'm watching this in front of my eyes. Have a good one.
ReplyDeleteThanks Chida... indeed a scary one and very unnerving.... but had to get over it quick....

OMG. You are very lucky. I think whatever good things you did past saved your life
ReplyDeleteThat's the only way to conclude this. Fact is everything is planned already and we live through those moments...
DeleteThanks for your comments

DeleteJab Sanjay uwacha toh sach hi hona chahiye...
DeleteThanks SP... it all happened so quick before we even realized... and glad to be alive.
And yes a huge turning point which changed my perspective..
Thanks a lot
Yet another page from your life- many others having gone thru similar..lucky all to be alive.Thank God.
ReplyDeleteThere's so much in each of our lives.... each ones a book and an epic.
DeleteWe've to view it that way....
Yes other friends also narrated their close shave....
Thanks a lot Sheela...
I remember you'd mentioned this during one of our lunch/coffee conversations Prasanna. Absolutely terrifying it must've been.
ReplyDeleteWe had a similar experience on Hosur Road back in Aug 2014. No semis or 18-wheelers, but our teensy Alto ended up on the other side of the road divider and had to be towed - and God is really great, not a scratch on any of us 6 occupants!
Every time I replay it in my mind, feel a little more gratitude for everyone and everything around.
I had not heard of this Alto Josie Rd from you... but then look at the rescue act by the Big Guy.... he willing anything can happen..
DeleteGratitude at each step with total acceptance and surrender is the right way...
Thanks a lot
So scary! beautifully narrated.
ReplyDeleteGod is been great to you both.
That's true.... thanks a lot Sandhya...
DeleteTake care
Wow! I never knew about this incident, Prasanna! Where exactly did this happen? You mention the "middle lane", so I am guessing it was pretty close to either Beaumont or Houston. When I was at USL, we have traveled a fair bit along I-10, from Lafayette to Lake Charles, Beaumont and Houston on I-10 West and to Baton Rouge and New Orleans on I-10 East.
ReplyDeleteSira Sudhi Sudhindranath yes on I10 probably some 20 to 30 miles outside Beaumont on the way to Houston.... the wrecker service arrived some 15 mts later.... we reached home with the car in tow parked in our parking lot.... the next day it was towed to a junk yard when we both realized there was nothing in the car that we could salvage
DeleteThanks a lot
Thanks
Wow - that must have been a horrible experience - you are absolutely right. Script is written by someone else - we are just players - thats how it seems like.
ReplyDeleteOh once again wish there was a name. We are only actors in a story where the script is well written. We have to be observant of life happenings and not react extensively. Thanks in any case

ReplyDeleteWhat a miracle. !! Sorry you needed to go through this, but glad you lived to tell the story.
Did you not open your cellphone and clicked photos ..? Wait, This was in 1994.
If it had happened now, there would have been a selfie with wreckage. But, that frozen image/experience is more impactful than a photo.
What hell you have gone through to realize heaven on earth in later years. Relish it.
Absolute miracle. It's etched in my memory Anantha. We were so unnerved from the wreck, that we literally lost all comprehension at that point in time. It helped change my perception - it is the same life that some see hell and some see heaven. What matters the most is the lenses we wear to witness the happenings!
DeleteThanks a lot for your time, the read, and your comments. Take care...
I’m immensely glad that you were in the fortunate side of that dreadful experience. Driving anywhere in the world can go from routine to extremely hazardous in a split second.
ReplyDeleteYou're right... when i drove from LasVegas to Grand Canyon the roads were so straight that it became boring and i squat on the seat...
DeleteAnd in this accident we both very into MasterH's dialogues and were fully involved...
Thanks Sharat.... appreciate it
Perfectly said "Lord has His own plans and we are only players."
ReplyDeleteTrue Patel... we go by His play script...
DeleteThanks a lot
I can totally connect with this as I too had an incident while I was learning to drive which still makes me sweat on how did I survive that day. I still try to avoid getting behind the wheel and prefer's to be a passenger.
ReplyDeleteLearning days are even trickier because small errors get easily magnified...
DeleteI had to get over it and i did it the very next day driving out to the highway
I wish you had left your name... thanks though
Dear Prassanna this must have been the most awakening experience of your life. All mantras and Gods would be on full chant mode
ReplyDeleteYes sir... you can bet on that. It made me realise the existence of a Higher Power that we've to acknowledge and abide by leaving behind our ego....
DeleteThank you for your concern and comments
